A walk down to the river...in Chatellerault.

After my birthday lunch in Châtellerault we decided to take a walks down the river Vienne, something we had not done for a long time,it was actually 2016! This, despite the fact that it is our go-to place for our weekly shopping...shame on us!
It was good to see that the the elegant 17th-century  Pont Henri IV  bridge has had a makeover.
It is the perfect spot for a quick photo stop for views along the river.

We then walked through the narrow back streets onto Av. du Président Wilson...
and passed the 'Guardian House' and 'La Gourmandine' hotel...
before reaching the roundabout with its fountain and the carpark.

Music all around us here in Southern Touraine...

Last night, we had choices galore—opera in the church at Le Grand-Pressigny, blues at Le Lavoir in Preuilly-sur-Claise, or folk at La Halle Café in Boussay. But we decided to stay here in La Guerche supporting our local venue, La Taverne.

'Sunshine Supermen' brought us the best of Pink Floyd, Lou Reed, Patti Smith, The Stranglers and the Rolling Stones. looks like every musical taste was covered!

  • Wherever you listened, hope you had a great time too!

The windows of Le little Bistro in Loches...who knew?

On last week's visit to Loches we passed these windows of 'Le little Bisto' perched on rue du Château. Now we have walked passed them many times and I thought it was a gite...but seems it's more than that!

As we walked by I read the little poster on the shutter which said the 'bistro' opens exclusively for aperitifs at the weekend which might include an impromptu concert...depending on the owner's mood!

Looking at their website there seems to be quite a few surprises behind these unassuming windows.

Sunday Lunch and cards with old friends...

On Sunday, we had our dear friends Karen and David over for lunch and our regular monthly card game. Our friendship with them goes back nearly 20 years, beginning when David was our neighbour during our time living in Barrou. Over the years, we’ve shared many happy moments together and our card games have become a fun way to stay connected.

We originally played the more complex game of 'Tarot' but things  got a bit too competitive. Thankfully, Karen introduced us to 'Up and Down the River', a lighter game that has brought the fun back into our gatherings

Reeling in the years...

On Saturday evening we were invited up behind Barrou for a BBQ and some musical entertainment by talented friends who have over the years, generously shared their love of Celtic music with us. As someone commented on the evening "our region really is awash with musical talent" indeed it is!

Hooray for the Hirondelles

We feel truly blessed here in Southern Touraine by the many great  friends we’ve made. One group in particular, affectionately known as the 'Hirondelles' (the Swallows),as  like their namesakes, they return each summer and with them comes plenty of laughter and good times
This week has been no exception: Thursday afternoon found us just outside Le Grand-Pressigny, where our generous hosts treated us to delicious fare from their kitchen and BBQ. Then, last night, we were warmly welcomed once again, this time in Le Petit-Pressigny, where we enjoyed yet another delightful evening of great company and fine food.

A walk around Le Grand-Pressigny

One of the joys of living in La Guerche is that the village is slightly off the beaten track, offering peace and quiet, yet within just 10 minutes you have access to all the amenities you need in the pretty neighbouring village of Le Grand-Pressigny but without its through traffic! When we visit we like to take a good walk around the village as it offers a number of different options to stroll that keeps it interesting.

You can wander up the narrow streets to enjoy a view of the village from the château’s terrace, or even visit the fascinating Prehistory Museum located within its grounds.

On this particular walk we chose to walk up behind the chateau into the countryside before circling back over the rivers back into the centre of the village.
We normally park in the centre of the village by the church, which is also worth a visit, as it also gives us the option of popping into one of the local bars for a coffee or refreshing drink.

Sharing a love of Loches...

Yesterday, we were invited to join Angela and Dennis for a day out in our favourite town in Touraine, the beautiful and historic Loches. As part of her birthday present from her family, Angela had been gifted an overnight stay at the recently renovated Hôtel de la Cité Royale, a stunning blend of elegance and heritage.

We decided to make a full day of it and accompany them to visit the exhibition currently on display in the town, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the death of Louis Delaporte (1842–1925). Delaporte, born in Loches, was a pioneering explorer, artist, and passionate advocate for Khmer art. He played a major role in introducing France and the wider world to the majestic ruins of Angkor, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site in present-day Cambodia.

The exhibition was beautifully held across two venues: the Musée Lansyer and the Royal Lodgings. It was a fitting tribute to a man whose life bridged continents and cultures, and whose legacy continues to inspire.

We started the day at the Musée Lansyer, one of our favourite spots to visit whenever we’re in Loches. We love popping in to check out the current exhibitions and to admire the work of the artist himself. One thing that always stands out is the story of Lansyer’s early years When he told his parents he wanted to pursue art, they insisted he find a “real job”- now that would have been a great loss.

We also made our usual climb to the top of the Porte Royale, accessible through the gardens of the house. It's one of our favourite spots for a panoramic view of Loches.
The sight from up there is timeless — the landscape looks much as it did centuries ago, offering a rare glimpse into the town’s long history. It’s amazing to stand there and think about how little has changed in the passing of time.

After our visit to the Musée Lansyer, we made our way over to the Royal Lodgings for the main exhibition. Though we’re frequent visitors to Loches, it had been a few years since we’d explored the Château or the Donjon, so the exhibition was the perfect excuse to reacquaint ourselves with these historic landmarks. It’s always a pleasure to rediscover the rich history of the town,

The ticket for the Château also includes entry to the Donjon, so we decided to split the visits and break for lunch at Au Comptoir. (Oh and we squeezed in a visit to some friends beautiful house in the centre of the 'Royal City'.)  It turned out to be a great choice, the food was delicious and the atmosphere was just right for a leisurely pause. Though we did have a bit of a “lost in translation” moment when it came to how the dishes were served, it only added to the charm of the experience. Sometimes, those little mix-ups are part of what makes dining out in a place like Loches so memorable!

A visit to the Donjon always involves a fair bit of stair climbing and descending. By the time we’d explored the Governor’s Residence and the dungeons opposite, the idea of climbing the keep felt like a step too far, especially since we’ve done it before! Still, the view from the base is impressive enough to make you appreciate the scale of the place and we were happy to call it a day at that point.

As we left, I couldn’t resist popping into the gardens where Richard the Lionheart surely walked in the past, it’s my favourite spot to capture the iconic view of the keep, a perspective I’ve photographed countless times, yet it never gets old. There’s something about that scene, with its history and timeless beauty, that always feels worth capturing again.

We then headed over to Angela and Dennis' home for the night where we joined them for a wee refreshment on the terrace before heading back to the car and heading off for a bit of supermarket shopping!

All in all, a memorable day filled with art, history, good company, a good lunch and a good appreciation for the cultural richness of this, our favourite town in Touraine.
