Wear a hat if out and about...
If you head over to the morning market at Loches be sure to wear a hat under these so so warm skies but don't worry if you don't have one - you can always buy one there.

Roses preview for our Australian guests.
Our current Australian guests at the Old Walnut Mill are leaving on Saturday for the next part of their seven week European tour so will miss the Rose Festival at Chedigny. They took our advise and had a sneak preview yesterday after visiting Loches market. The images here are theirs.
They were kind enough to say that the climbing rose in our courtyard would give some of them a run for their money!

Loches,lunch and 'Le Gerbe d'Or'.

Had to go up to Loches yesterday so decided to lunch at 'Le Gerbe d'Or'. which is the restaurant we recommend to the guests at our houses when visiting the Saturday or Wednesday markets. We weren't disappointed we had a good 'menu de jour', 3 courses with a glass of wine for 13.80 € served as ever by friendly and attentive staff.

Loire Valley working its magic again...
Our last guests at 'Les Balcons' spent their last day enjoying the sunshine as they were heading back to Scotland where they said may not get much of a chance to enjoy much more (sure they were only joking!) They enjoyed staying in Le Grand Pressigny and exploring places like Loches on market day and the ever enchanting Chateau de Chenonceau.

Wednesday normally means Loches market for our guests here in Centre-Val de Loire

Guests staying at on of our vacation rentals (gites) here in Southern Touraine normally head up to Loches market on a Wednesday which is a comfortable half hour drive from the houses. Here you can sample the unique experience of a typical (?) French market and afterwards (it is morning only) sample one of the many restaurants for a leisurely lunch before taking in the sights.

Loches 'Marché Nocturne'...
Loches' market is always a good day out but why not try it with its nighttime ambiance with musical accompaniment.

The other day I learned something...
When we were at Loches market on Saturday I took a photograph of these carrots...which reminded me of a comment a friend had made recently about how originally carrots were actually purple. It wasn't until the 16th century, when Dutch (had to be orange of course) growers started cultivating certain strains and crossing mutated varieties that we were eventually introduced to the modern day orange variety.
I like learning new things even at my ripe old age. I was also reminded of a something the Dalai Lama had said:
"When you talk you are only repeating what you know but when you listen you may learn something new:"
Clever chap that Dalai Lama, don't you think?
