The sign of a good party?

Snapped this at the end of a lovely evening with friends here in La Guerche. As we sat having a wee nightcap (as if we needed it!) we  heard loud music and the use of a microphone going on and thought we had perhaps missed the notice of a local fete. We decided to head out in the dark to investigate only to find it was actually just a house party around the corner! As we passed they were actually being visited by the Gendarmerie, we assume telling them to keep the noise down. Reminded us of a great night we had in our courtyard in Barrou way back in 2013 (😮) when someone called them in!
We were celebrating Mike's birthday and I set up my disco gear...lot of fun and dancing.
This pic I took sort of sums it up!

Mesure pour mesure at Château de La Guerche.

Last night we once again found ourselves in the courtyard of our neighbour Château de La Guerche, watching an outdoor production of Shakespeare's Mesure pour mesure (Measure for Measure).

The setting could hardly have been more appropriate. The château's stone walls and towers as usual forming the natural stage set, their centuries-old presence lending extra weight to a play preoccupied with power, justice and the uneasy balance between the rules we impose on others and those we apply to ourselves.

Watching Shakespeare in French was, linguistically at least, well beyond us. Yet, as with previous productions by the Théâtre du Perron, a basic familiarity with the story meant the language soon became secondary as the visual expressions and staging carried much of the drama, allowing the performance to be appreciated in a different way.

In this production, the moral tension at the heart of the play felt especially strong. Angelo's uncompromising virtue, Isabella's unwavering integrity, our standout performance of the evening and the Duke's elaborate (?) games of disguise and judgement unfolded against the solid, unchanging backdrop of a château that has we are sure witnessed centuries of changing rulers and shifting ideas of justice.

There was an added resonance in hearing debates about mercy, authority and punishment within walls that have themselves survived wars, revolutions and the steady passage of history.

Outdoor theatre has a character all its own. As darkness fell, the illuminated stonework became part of the production. The actors' voices carried effortlessly across the courtyard, and when the play explored its darker themes, abuse of authority, hypocrisy and moral compromise, the historic setting amplified the atmosphere without ever overwhelming the performance.

The Théâtre du Perron has been staging classical theatre at La Guerche since 2019, making imaginative use of the château itself as an integral part of each production. It is an approach that transforms a historic monument into a living performance space rather than simply a backdrop.

For a three hours, Shakespeare's Vienna and southern Touraine seemed to occupy the same world. The language may have been French, the play English but the questions Shakespeare asks about justice, mercy and human nature needed no translation.

Measure for Measure is often described as one of Shakespeare's 'problem plays', occupying the uncertain ground between comedy and tragedy. Under the open sky at La Guerche, for us those ambiguities felt particularly alive. After the final scene, the cast returned with an exuberant musical finale, their evident enjoyment reflected in the audience's enthusiastic applause.

This is now the sixth production we've seen here and it has become one of the highlights of our Loire Valley summers. Big shout out to the cast, musical ensemble and family for another lovely evening.

Last performance tonight.

Getting back in step...

Went out for a wee walk yesterday around La Guerche, first since returning from our extended stay in Scotland. The shy sunflowers brought some brightness to a somewhat overcast morning.

Reflecting on yesterday's walk...

I joined Pauline on her walk to Barrou and back yesterday (7.5km). The walks takes us along the back road from La Guerche, around the former stad and passed the campsite before returning along the same route. The campsite owners are currently making new pitches for their static caravans on the ground in front of their small lake (above). We think this is because of the damage that they experienced due to flooding a couple of years ago on the existing site.
The owners work really hard at keeping the site in tip top condition and we are sure the new extension will be a credit to them as well.
Another feature of the walk is that we pass a former farm holding that has been renovated to a high standard but still has a lot of potential with its out building. We noticed yesterday that a large water basin had been filled in near the property below which sits within the site. Looks like this may be the next part of their renovation project.

The walk doesn't provide much in the way of colour on the way so it was good to capture these wild poppies yesterday.

Every picture tells a story...

Snapped this in our courtyard this morning. It shows the 'door' of our 'appentis' which is a door from our former Barrou house that we replaced, it is not actually the usable entry but there once was a door there. The mirrors which show the four seasons were bout for our very first flat in Kilmarnock,Scotland and are now over 50 years old! The butterfly was bought in Barcelona many years ago and the two wall planters on our last Spanish adventure.
