A weekend of birthday parties and brocante...

Had a fine weekend...birthday party with a real Gaelic flavour, Irish hosts with Irish,Scottish and Welsh guests,on Saturday evening. The temperature even dropped for us late into the evening to make us all feel at home😊 Lovely night !!

On Sunday morning we popped in on our annual brocante here in Barrou - always fun. So glad the sun came out for the stall holders...makes such a difference.

Only 'admired' these chests.

Liked these, wish I'd bought them now though we rarely have to reseal a bottle so would have been redundant!

After the brocante we headed over to Le Grand-Pressigny for another birthday celebration of a French friend where we had an afternoon of good company with me accompanying the host in providing some light entertainment...good fun.

Happy guests in the Loire Valley

With the sun shining and the sunflowers out the Loire Valley is again working its magic. Last week the three houses were occupied and two sets of guests left happy, the third are enjoying a second week.
The chateau at La Guerche

The guests at the 'Old Walnut Mill' found all they were looking for here in Southern Touraine, here is their guestbook comment:

5th August 2017

Thank you so much Pauline and Jim for your hospitality and friendly service. We have absolutely loved our stay here at the 'Old Walnut Mill'. The house is spotlessly clean, well equipped and with the added bonus of a beautiful enclosed courtyard/garden. We have eaten out every day and were totally relaxed here in Barrou and the surrounding villages. Thank you for the general welcome pack and the fab local advice and recommendations. Lunch at 'Auberge du Vieux Port' in Maire was amazing quality and value (great company too!). Le Grand-Pressigny, the chateau and 'Chez Grand Ma' were enjoyable, La Roche Posay, Angles-sur-l'Anglin, La Guerche - so many lovely villages, we didn't need to stray too far. We pushed the boat out one night and enjoyed a delicious meal at 'Le Promenade' in Le Petit-Pressigny - a memorable experience. The local walks are just beautiful , down by the river and further afield behind Barrou. We found the locals really friendly and welcoming including Willi and Sandra at the local bar / restaurant.
We wish you well in all your projects and hope to return sometime soon.

The house is absolutely fab and immaculate, a credit to Jim & Pauline. The area is beautiful with plenty to do for all the family. Stayed here for one week, wish we were here for longer but now on to the Dordogne for second week. Hopefully will be back in the future and would definitely recommend. Thanks for a great stay.

A walk along Rue du Commerce at Souzay-Champigny

Back in the middle of July as part of our visit to Montresor with Mike & Liz we took a walk along the troglodyte street of 'Rue du Commerce' at nearby Souzay-Champigny. This is a street cut into the rock along the banks of the river Loire. Formed after the extraction of the rock used for chateau and house building. Well worth a visit!

Could be an interesting weekend at the chateau in Le Grand-Pressigny!

On Friday,Saturday and Sunday 4th/5th/6th August the chateau at Le Grand-Pressigny will be taken over by actors, musicians and circus performers as they present ‘Arts Scéniques et Vieilles Dentelles’
Not quite sure of the format as it sound a little complicated – my understanding is that the ‘show’ consists of eight theatrical performances, lasting about 15 to 20 minutes.Enrty price allows entry into the chateau museum.

Futuroscope...

We were kindly invited to Futuroscope, by their marketing department who are trying to improve the number of international visitors to the park. Currently only 7% of their visitors come from outside the country. We sat through a couple of hours of 'selling' the park which included a 'question and answer' session. A very articulate owner (German, I think) made a good comparison between the park here and 'Parc du Fuy' before arriving at the conclusion that Futuroscope should not be marketed as a 'theme park' as it is something quite different. Our hosts agreed and said they knew that what they had was quite unique - which it is - and perhaps had to find a better way to 'sell' it to foreign visitors. Having been in sales myself, didn't think they should be knocking the competition "their food is very bad" (Parc du Fuy)- setting themselves up for a fall perhaps?

Anyway, although in the department of Vienne, for visitors to the Loire Valley with children, especially if you are staying in Southern Touraine, it is well within reach.

My honest opinion of the day is that had I paid for the visit, which at the best 'day rate' for two people is €72, (then add the same again for food and drinks for the day) I would have felt slightly let down. Well, up until the the night spectacular - which I have to say lived up to its name and is included in the price
.

The only problem is that in summertime you have quite a wait (10.45pm for us) until its dark enough for the show to start, so you end up, as we did, having time to kill. We did this by visiting some of the less inviting 'attractions' that we had felt earlier were not worth seeing as we had experienced some of them on an earlier visit. It also gave us older guests a chance for a nap - I chose the 'Born to be wild' show for my own personal 'power-nap' as interesting as it was, it was only something you would now see on the discovery channel or the likes but on a huge screen.

Here is my summation of the park as a 'foreign visitor'.

Location:

The park is situated just outside the city of Poitiers in the Vienne region of France with good auto-route and rail links making it easily accessible. Its situation south of the river Loire in Central France means that you can expect good weather during the summer months with many hours of sunshine. There is ample parking which costs €7.00 for 24 hours (€3.00 if you arrive after 5.00pm)

Access by road either from the A10, exit number 28, or from the N10 taking the exit signposted for 'Futuroscope'

Park layout:

The parks layout is well thought out and most of the architecture is stunning...I well remember first seeing it way back in 2005 and thinking its futuristic appearance was well matched to the idea of a 'futoroscope' park. It still holds true today. When you consider the park was conceived way back in 1987 it was certainly forward thinking. Although there did not seem to be a great number of visitors during the day of our visit the park easily swallowed them up proving its ability to cater for greater numbers with relative ease.

Inside, the park has good directional sign-posting throughout, designed around 'more than 3 minutes' or 'less than 3 minutes' letting you know that you are never really far away from the next attraction. This plus the map you receive on entering the park make it fairly easy to navigate. It is well served for toilet facilities which are again well sign-posted.

Attractions:

The park's attractions can be split into three categories, very good attractions, good attractions and not so good attractions. There are not enough very good attractions in our opinion. 'Arthur, the 4D Adventure' is great - the kids must love it.The 'Little Prince' is a close second. 'Dancing with Robots' which is the nearest you get to a traditional 'theme-park' ride was also good and even though it was one of the few attractions we had to queue for, we were 'entertained' while we waited.Surprisingly our other favourite was one of the earliest creations of the park, 'Dynamic Vienne' which whisks you through the sites of the region on everything from a caddy car to a racing car while sitting on  seats that jolt and throw you in simulated movements to tie in with the film show.

Two of the newest attractions - the heavily promoted 'The Time Machine' with its toilet humour (you actually sit on a loo seat) and rabbits was clever but disappointing and the latest 'Virus Attack' was really just a poor version of 'Arthur' which purports to take you through the human body - but no doubt the kids will probably like them. You can only be tossed around so many times before you start to wonder if they have just run out of ideas.

The IMAX cinemas were probably great when the park first opened but are a bit 'old hat' now, although have to say as we were 'killing time' for the night spectacular we did enjoy 'Wings of courage'  and the new 'Mission Hubble'. all the commentaries are in French but you can pick up a free translator and headphones - these cost €1 - but you can bring your own.

Tip:
If you go after 5.00pm the parking is cheaper and entrance is only €20.00 and you probably have enough time to take in the main features as well as the evening spectacular.

Or after 8.00pm it is only €10.00...with a couple of kids it is well worth considering!

Please note: This post is actually one year old and had been in my 'drafts' posts and forgotten about. It was only after comparing their 'spectacular' recently with the one in Ciran that I rememberedit had not been 'posted'. So the information re attractions may not be up to date as they are always looking to improve things...check out their site for current information,

Another successful Ciran spectacular

We checked out this year's Ciran 'spectacular'  'Alors, on Danse' last night after having been entertained by some friends in the village and came away yet again full of admiration for the organisers who again excelled themselves with this, the first of a new production.

It was good to see a good turn out for the event

We were taken around the world...

which included a trip to Scotland...

and a visit from the Lochness Monster.

Definitely the highlight of the evening for us!

England was represented by a unique version of the 'Full Monty'

The night ended with the usual splendid fireworks display

Americans visiting the gardens of the Loire Valley

Yesterday we said farewell to the latest guests at the Old Walnut Mill who were visiting France from the USA. Their favourite visits were to the garden festival at Chaumont-sur-Loire and the gardens at Chateau Villandry.

Here is their comment from the house's guestbook:

"Dear Pauline & Jim, Tom and I so enjoyed our stay. Your home is beautiful and so comfortable! By far the best bedroom I have had since I arrived (in France) and your suggestions for daily travel were spot on and very welcome. Thank you for being the hands on hosts that you were so, as to me you seem more like friends than anything else. I wish you the best of luck with all of your ventures. We will always remember your warmth and hospitality."

Church on Sunday -Saint Eulalie in Genille

Three days...three houses

Pauline and I are in the middle of preparing the three houses for incoming guests. First of all was 'Le Bourg' where guests arrived yesterday, today we are at the 'Old Walnut Mill' where our American guest is leaving today and new guests arrive tomorrow. Then it's 'Les Balcons' tomorrow where new guests are also arriving. We are, I suppose, lucky to have our guests arriving and departing at different times as don't know how we could manage all three in one day...we couldn't! Next weekend we actually have a double changeover, which we can just about cope with.

More chocolate...

We had to print off some rail tickets for our guests at the Old Walnut Mill and as they had popped in to the 'chocolaterie' in Manthelan, on our recommendation, on their way to the Garden Festival at Chaumont we were 'rewarded' by sampling some of their interesting purchases. We had missed these - chocolates with a little 'bottle' of liquor attached which had to be drunk along with the chocolate - could see this becoming a party game - 'guess the liquor'

Going underground for my birthday...

For my birthday yesterday we managed to cram in a reasonably busy day. We were joined by friends Mike and Liz on a day that started really well for me - a visit to the 'chocolaterie' in Manthelan for a spot of 'tasting' and buying, highly recommend it!

Then we headed over to our favourite vintner for a spot of wine tasting (as if we need to) and buying. As it was nearing lunchtime we were joined in an apero by our delightful host.

Lunch was at  ‘Le Pied dans le plat' just outside Charge.

After lunch we headed over to Bourré to do a little research in the mushroom caves and 'La Ville Souterraine'

Interesting though 'La Ville Souterraine' is, it is a bit of a misnomer as it proved to be a very small section of the caves amounting to part of a street rather than a 'ville'

Back to Barrou and an invite to the Old Walnut Mill from our current guests to join them for a bite to eat and a few drinks - all in all a very good day !

Les tournesols ne se tournent pas

Looking towards La Guerche from behind le Petite Guerche...try as I might could not get the sunflowers to turnaround for the pic..
