Day 2 in Granada...visiting the troglodyte caves of Sacromonte.

Living in the Loire Valley we have visited a number of troglodyte villages but even though Pauline had visited the caves at 'Museo Cuevas del Sacromonte' on a previous visit here ('girls' weekend maybe 20 years ago) she felt it was worth visiting again plus its position high up behind the Alhambra meant we could put in a good walk!

To get there we walked from our apartment along the banks of  the river Darro before turning left onto Cta. Aceituneros, heading uphill to the small neighbourhood of Sacromonte which sits on the hillside beneath the 'Albaicin' one of the ancient centres of Muslim Granada.

On the way up you pass a number of bars who have adapted the caves behind them to host traditional flamenco concerts.
You will then come across the steep and long (100 mtrs) path/steps leadlng up to the caves.
There are eleven caves fitted out to show how people ( the gypsies ) might have lived in the caves and some traditional activities they may have carried out there. all a bit touristy but the information they provide makes it interesting enough. It reminded be of the caves at Saint-Remy-sur-Creuse but here they are lucky enough to have the tourists, like us, visiting Granada and the Alhambra and looking for other attractions.

There are other caves with displays about the local flora and fauna and an exhibition about troglodyte dwellings worldwide where our own Loire Valley is featured.
There is also an excellent vantage point for viewing the Alhambra and the river valley and taking a selfie! .

How we walked there...
