As it happens it must still remain a dream...the photo above is looking down on the Castillo de San Pedro ruins and the only legal camping beach in Spain, apparently, our failed destination for yesterday's 10km hike.
We started with good intentions, we arrived at the village of Las Negras where we replenished our water rations, (we had actually forgotten to take them out of the fridge!) before setting out to find our starting point.
I had read on one of the hiking trail sites that you had to drive along a dirt road to get you nearer to the starting point of the walk
The road was beginning to get a bit dodgy when we decided to abandon it and continue the rest of the way on foot with Pauline unconvinced we were on the right track.
Bizarrely after about a kilometre the road surface suddenly changed as it led to a car park and the starting point of the walking trail.
Pauline was reassured that we were where we should be!
That was until she saw the terrain and the state of the path we were heading out on.
This was the ridge that once over it you caught your first glimpse of Castillo de San Pedro ruins and the beach.
The path gets steeper and rockier as it winds down towards the bay. . You pass a small house integrated into the natural surroundings until you get down to the ruins of Castillo de San Pedro and signs of the hippie settlement,.
At one point you have to walk along a narrow sloping path and hold onto a rope on your inside with a drop to the sea on your outside.
It was also a little unsettling to find large rocks blocking the path at some points.
We made it down as far as the ruins of Castillo de San Pedro but Pauline realised that it had taken us a wee bit longer than it would your average (younger) hikers and it would be best to start heading back to avoid walking part of the path after sundown.
We caught a glimpse of the small hippie colony who live near the Springwater source near the ruins.
This was as close as we got before turning around and heading back. Yes we missed setting foot on the beach and having a wee drink at the bar but not so sure it was a great loss and anyway if we had doddled it would definately have meant a walk back in the dark!
We then had to face the 'ropey' bits of the trail with a full sun in our eyes, just to make it more interesting.
We made it back to civilization just in time to catch a lovely sunset.
Pauline snapped this through the windscreen on our way back to Almeria.
Found this pic. of the hippie village on the beach from a family who made the walk along the coastal path from Las Negras.
