White washed houses of Nijar and the inevitable climb...

Yesterday we ventured out of the city by car for the first time, to one of the neighbouring pretty villages of the region, Nijar. Wee bit stressful getting out and actually locating the car where we had left it a week ago! but once clear of the city the driving was straightforward enough.

The town is listed as one of the most beautiful in Spain, its certainly pretty! Our first step was a visit to the first of two (?) tourist offices which is reakky a gift shop with a counter with a few leaflets and a youbg woman who was not really very helpful, we thoght maybe the other one will be better.

Walking through the pretty whitewashed streets you catch the occasional glimpse of the watchtower that sit high above the town. We decided to leave it until after lunch to explore it.
We found the pretty little square which contained the townhall/tourist office number two with a much friendlier and helpful young lady and a lovely little restaurant that we chose to eat at.

After a good lunch we headed for the watchtower.
It is one of the town’s historical and cultural landmarks dating from the 14th / 16th centuries and is all that remains of the ancient fortress that defended the town during the period of Muslim domination.
Once we reached the top and the tower the views were fabulous.

There was a further pathway that led up to a higher viewing point giving a view of another tower, there were many, further along the coast.

Going back down felt so much easier!

We finished the day at a pottery in the area of the town designated as a ceramic centre. The one we chose has been here for generations with the mother of the family, in her 80's, still putting in a three hour shift painting their wares. Her son, who gave  us a tour said that she she is at her happiest when she has a brush in her hand and she certainly was in fine spirits while we watched as she did what she has done since she was10 years old...great skill.
