As you enter almost every French village or town you will see a
cross or a crucifix (calvaries) stationed in a prominent position as a
reminder of the powerful and pervasive influence the Catholic Church has had on the country's culture for two millennia.
These crucifixes however are not the only ever-present crosses within French culture...
...no there is another - the sign of the pharmacy. This is BIG business over here where they still use between two and
three times more prescription drugs than in Britain, Germany and Italy.The biggest users are the over seventies and it is not unusual to see some old dears leaving with carrier bags of the stuff! I cannot comment on the prescribing of drugs but you have to wonder at the huge differences in use between these countries and cultures.
